Faith and Evolution: Beyond the Conflict
From Eric Elnes: A CrossWalk America Public Theology Action
Do you look forward to the day when the main thing that comes to mind when the words Christian, Creation, and Evolution appear in the same sentence is not self-righteous, politicized battles but people filled with awe and wonder over the mystery and majesty of God’s Earth? You are not alone.
Affirmation 10 of the Phoenix Affirmations states that Christian love of self includes claiming the sacredness of both our minds and our hearts, recognizing that faith and science, doubt and belief serve the pursuit of truth.
This is one reason why CrossWalk America supports the Clergy Letter Project – a grassroots effort seeking Christian clergy to sign An Open Letter Concerning Religion and Science affirming “the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist.” So far, the Project has not only met its goal of 10,000 clergy signatures, but exceeded it! | We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. MORE. |
Now, on Sunday February 11th, nearly 600 Christian churches across the country are celebrating Evolution Sunday, affirming God’s mystery and majesty, and the compatibility of faith and science. To find a church near you, click here.

In support of this awareness-raising effort, CrossWalk America is pleased to provide two in-depth podcast interviews with leaders standing at the intersection of faith and science. We have also collaborated with Renegade Cinema to produce a short, very funny video that makes a serious point. Organizations supporting this effort include the Beatitudes Society, the Christian Alliance for Progress, The Center for Progressive Christianity, and the Clergy Letter Project.
